SERVING POLICE OFFICER HAS BEEN SPARED JAIL AFTER HE ARRANGED TO MEET A 15-YEAR-OLD BOY ON GRINDR

2018.

Detective Constable Jonathan Davies-Brewin, aged 50, was found with poppers, sex toys, and lubricant when he went to meet a boy in a Tesco car park.

He had been communicating with the boy via a hookup app under the alias Older4Youngerx.

However, upon arrival, he was met by his colleagues, who arrested him, with Davies-Brewin commenting that his arrest was ‘long overdue’ and that they had ‘done him a favor’.

He attempted to claim he was part of an undercover operation, but court evidence showed he had sent explicit photos of himself, including images wearing boxers that revealed his groin.

He received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

The police officer, who served for 25 years, has since retired.

Prosecutor Raj Joshi outlined to the court that Davies-Brewin also inquired if the boy had enjoyed encounters with other men and whether he wished to meet an older man.

Their conversation continued on WhatsApp, leading to a planned meeting on June 14 of the previous year.

Mr Joshi detailed that the conversation persisted until the meeting was scheduled, with police discovering sexual toys and devices in Davies-Brewin’s car after it was examined.

Additionally, amyl nitrite, commonly known as poppers, was found during the search.

His phone contained numerous contacts and images of young men.

The Crown acknowledged the presence of many contacts and photographs but noted it was difficult to determine if any images depicted minors, hence no further charges were filed.

Nevertheless, evidence showed extensive contact with other young men, and Davies-Brewin admitted to having a sexual preference for young men.

Judge David Turner QC remarked that the defendant narrowly avoided imprisonment but did not believe he would re-offend.

He added: ‘This was calculated conduct by a serving police officer who was aware of the legal and practical constraints, and you saw it through in a chillingly short time.

‘It was a chilling exchange and even if during that exchange you had any doubts as to whether this was an adult play acting or a boy engaging with what appeared to be going on, about 1.5 hours later you drove to the Tesco car park where you were confronted by police colleagues.

‘And you made a significant and rather perplexing remark at the time of the police arriving.

‘It’s difficult to know what you meant when you said it.

Perhaps you spoke more truly at that point than you recognised.

For too long you have dabbled in risk-taking behaviour.’ Davies-Brewin resigned from the Force Support Unit on January 18, 2018, a department responsible for weapons incidents and firearms operations.

Mr Conley noted that his retirement was planned and not driven by the ongoing criminal case.

An officer from the Independent Office for Police Conduct explained that Davies-Brewin benefited from recent legislation change last December that allows officers to retire early.

He is required to register as a sex offender for ten years, is subject to a sexual harm prevention order, and must undertake 200 hours of unpaid community service, along with rehabilitation programs.

Additionally, he is ordered to pay £1,200 in court costs within two months.
